Asuna is the best all-around party member in SAO: Hollow Realization. Learn how she fights, how to maximize Switch combos with her, and why she should be in your party for almost every situation.
Why Asuna Is Your MVP
If there is one party member you should keep in your active lineup for almost the entire game, it is Asuna. She brings a combination of high melee DPS, reliable emergency healing, and excellent Switch follow-up timing that no other character matches. The AI controls her extremely well -- she positions intelligently, dodges attacks effectively, lands multi-hit rapier combos, and will throw out heals the moment party members get low on health.
Asuna uses a Rapier, which means fast multi-thrust attacks with high critical hit rates. She attacks quickly and frequently, building decent stagger and applying constant pressure to enemies. While she cannot tank like Lisbeth or snipe from range like Sinon, she is the most balanced and consistently useful ally you have.
Asuna's Combat Behavior
Understanding how Asuna behaves in combat helps you synergize with her:
• High uptime -- Asuna stays on targets aggressively, rarely backing off unless her health is low. She applies consistent damage pressure.
• Multi-thrust combos -- She chains rapier thrusts together in rapid succession, landing many hits quickly. This builds SP for her and adds to enemy Risk.
• Critical hits -- Her rapier attacks crit frequently, and she will often land critical hit chains on staggered enemies.
• Healing priority -- Her healing behavior is smart. She prioritizes healing you (the player) over other NPCs when multiple people are hurt, and she will use heals proactively before HP gets dangerously low rather than waiting for someone to be nearly dead.
• Switch reliability -- Asuna is one of the best at responding to Switch prompts quickly and effectively. If you stagger an enemy, Asuna will almost always take the Switch follow-up if she is available.
Player Tip: If you ever see Asuna stop attacking and pull back slightly, it usually means she is about to use a healing skill. Give her a second to cast, especially if your party is hurt. Do not run away from her during these moments or you might move out of heal range.
Building Synergy with Asuna
To maximize your effectiveness alongside Asuna:
• When you stagger an enemy, immediately look for the Switch prompt over Asuna's head and trigger it. Her Switch follow-up is fast and damaging, and it gives you SP refund plus i-frames.
• After she staggers an enemy with her combos, she will sometimes create Switch opportunities for YOU. Watch for the blue marker on YOUR screen -- this means she has set you up for a follow-up.
• Keep an eye on her HP. She is durable for a DPS character but not a tank. If she takes heavy damage, consider using a defensive tactical command or drawing enemy attention away from her.
• She is excellent at continuing your SSC chains via Switch. If you end your own skill chain with a stagger or launch, triggering Switch to Asuna extends the combo through her attacks.
Affinity and Asuna's Growth
Raising affinity with Asuna makes her noticeably more effective in combat:
• She heals more frequently and with stronger heals at higher affinity.
• She responds to Switch faster and uses stronger skills for her follow-up attacks.
• She stays in combat longer even when hurt, trusting that you (or she) can heal through.
• You unlock special combination attacks and character story scenes.
Asuna appreciates cooking ingredients and food items as gifts, along with thoughtful dialogue choices that align with her personality -- she is caring, determined, and values cooperation and protecting others. Do not be a jerk to her in conversations and affinity will build naturally as you adventure together.
For boss fights, Asuna + Lisbeth is the best core duo of allies. Lisbeth tanks and staggers, Asuna deals DPS and heals. You can fill the third slot with whomever the situation calls for (Sinon for ranged safety on dangerous melee bosses, Silica for extra support, Premiere for story scaling).
