Battle Skills Guide: Buffs, Debuffs, and Non-Sword-Skill Abilities

Category: Combat & Skills | SAO Hollow Realization Guide

Complete guide to Battle Skills in SAO: Hollow Realization -- buffs, debuffs, healing, utility, and which skills to unlock first.

What Are Battle Skills? Sword Skills are your weapon-specific special attacks, but Battle Skills are your non-attack abilities: buffs that increase your damage or defense, debuffs that weaken enemies, healing abilities, utility moves, and temporary power-ups. Every weapon skill tree includes Battle Skill nodes (usually the blue nodes), and some universal Battle Skills exist outside weapon trees. Many new players completely ignore Battle Skills because they are focused entirely on sword skills and combos. This is a mistake. A well-timed buff or debuff can turn a losing fight into an easy victory, and some Battle Skills provide effects you cannot get anywhere else.

Types of Battle Skills

Self-Buffs These are abilities you cast on yourself (or sometimes your party) to temporarily increase combat effectiveness: • Attack Up -- Significantly increases your physical damage output for a moderate duration. Use these before big Switch chains or SSC combos for maximum effect. • Defense Up -- Reduces incoming damage. Essential before pushing Risk high on bosses or before tanking a known heavy attack. • Speed/Agility Up -- Increases movement speed and can extend i-frames or attack speed. Useful for repositioning and faster dodging. • Critical Rate Up -- Boosts your chance to land critical hits. Pairs extremely well with Rapier and Dagger builds that already have high crit rates. • SP Regeneration Up -- Makes your SP gauge recover faster, letting you chain more sword skills without SP potions.

Player Tip: Always read the duration of your buffs. Many Battle Skills only last for a short window. Do not waste a powerful Attack Up buff while you are running across the room to reach the enemy -- activate it right as you engage.

Debuffs (Enemy Effects) These skills weaken enemies or apply negative effects: • Defense Down -- Reduces enemy defense, making all your attacks deal more damage. Stack this with high Risk and SSC chains for boss-melting damage. • Attack Down -- Reduces enemy damage output. Excellent for surviving high Risk states and Risk Break periods. • Speed Down -- Slows enemy movement and attack speed, making it much easier to Perfect Guard or dodge their attacks. • Status ailment application -- Some Battle Skills guarantee poison, paralysis, or stun application on hit.

Healing and Support • Self-heal -- Instant HP recovery on a cooldown. Not as strong as potions but free and usable without consuming items. • Party heal -- Heals you and nearby allies. Vital if you are not running a dedicated healer in your party. • Status cleanse -- Removes poison, paralysis, and other negative effects from yourself. • Revive -- Some late-game Battle Skills let you revive fallen allies faster or from range.

Which Battle Skills to Unlock First Prioritize these in your skill tree as soon as you have spare SP: • A basic self-heal -- Having an on-demand heal that does not consume potions saves inventory space and Col. • Attack Up buff -- Even a basic Attack Up substantially increases your damage. Get this early. • Defense Up or Attack Down -- One defensive ability for tough fights. • SP Regeneration -- If your weapon tree has an SP regen buff, grab it.
