Conquer the canyon regions in SAO: Hollow Realization. Cliffside paths, rock-type enemies, dangerous drops, ore mining, and the canyon dungeon approach.
Canyon Terrain Challenges
The canyon regions present a different kind of challenge than open fields or deserts. Instead of wide-open spaces, you navigate narrow cliffside paths, winding gorges, and rocky ledges. Camera management becomes more important because walls and cliffs can obscure your view. Enemies here are often rock or mineral-based, with high defense and heavy-hitting attacks. You will also find rich ore deposits here that are valuable for blacksmith upgrades.
Canyon Enemies
• Rock golems/golems -- Slow but extremely durable stone enemies. They hit hard and resist physical damage somewhat. Use skills with high stagger to break their posture.
• Aerial enemies -- Birds or flying creatures that nest in canyon walls. They swoop down to attack, making them difficult to hit from narrow paths. Ranged allies (Sinon) or anti-air skills help here.
• Reptile/lizard enemies -- Quick, aggressive lizard-type creatures that climb canyon walls and lunge at you. They are faster than golems and attack in groups.
• Bandits/humanoids in camps -- Some canyon areas have bandit encampments. These enemies use weapons and sword skills, making them more intelligent than beast types.
• Oozes/slimes in cave areas -- If there are cave sections within the canyon, expect slime-type enemies that can split or be resistant to certain damage types.
Player Tip: On narrow cliff paths, be careful about dodging sideways. It is possible to roll off ledges in some areas, which either drops you to a lower path (costing time) or into a dangerous area. Practice forward and backward dodges on narrow paths rather than side rolls.
Navigation and Key Locations
Canyons are linear in some places and maze-like in others. Follow these principles:
• Activate the entrance teleport stone immediately. The canyon's entrance stone is usually just past the zone transition.
• Follow the main path initially. Side paths often lead to treasure or ore but sometimes lead to dead ends with high-level enemies.
• Look for wooden bridges, natural rock arches, and carved stairs -- these indicate the main path forward.
• There is often a mid-canyon teleport stone near a campsite or cave entrance, roughly halfway through the region.
• Before the canyon boss or dungeon, there should be a wider clearing or plateau area with a teleport stone. This is your retry point.
• Check behind rock pillars and on elevated ledges for chests. Many canyon treasures are tucked out of direct line of sight.
Mining and Materials
Canyons are the best place to mine ore for blacksmith upgrades. Bring a weapon if you are planning to spend time upgrading gear:
• Ore nodes are found on rock faces and in cave sections. They respawn when you leave the area and return.
• Higher-grade ores are found deeper into the canyon region, closer to the dungeon.
• Golem-type enemies drop stone and mineral materials when defeated, which are also useful for enhancement.
• Stock up on ore here -- later regions have different material types, and good ore is always useful for upgrading.
Canyon Boss Strategy
The canyon boss is typically a large golem, reptile, or rock-themed creature. Key strategies:
• The boss has high physical defense. Power-bombing it with non-stop attacks is less effective than waiting for openings and using well-timed SSC chains.
• Watch for its arm-swing attacks -- these cover a wide arc in front of it and can knock you back (potentially off edges if you are near cliffs).
• It has a powerful charge or roll attack that covers distance quickly. Dodge sideways rather than backward.
• When it slams its fists on the ground, it creates a shockwave. Jump or dodge backward to avoid the AoE.
• Mace users (Lisbeth) are excellent here because repeated heavy hits can stagger even this heavily armored boss, creating openings.
• Perfect Guarding its big swings leaves it vulnerable for several seconds -- punish hard with Switch chains during these windows.
