Early Game Mistakes to Avoid

The most common mistakes new players make and how to avoid them. Save time, Col, and frustration.

Learn From Others' Errors Same mistakes trap new players constantly. None ruin saves permanently, but they waste hours and cause unnecessary deaths. Here are the big ones.

Mistake 1: Forgetting to Equip Skills #1 mistake -- unlock skills but do not assign to palette, then fight with only normal attacks. Fix: Every new skill must be manually assigned to your palette in the Skills menu before combat.

Mistake 2: Not Activating Teleport Stones Run deep into new areas, die, respawn all way back in town. Fix: Activate teleport stone FIRST in every new area, before fighting/looting.

Mistake 3: Wasting Col on Early Upgrades Pour all materials into starter weapon +5, then find better weapon next dungeon. Fix: Early gear +2/+3 max; save heavy upgrades for mid-game weapons you keep.

Player Tip: Repair costs are always worth paying; upgrade costs are what to be cautious about. Half-durability gear performs far worse than non-upgraded gear at full durability.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the Party System Solo everything thinking AI is useless. Party AI is actually competent -- heals, staggers for Switch, revives you. Fix: Recruit Asuna/Lisbeth early; keep them in party; use Switch.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Status Ailments Ignore poison ticking because per-tick damage seems small; boss fight poison takes you to critical while you dodge. Same with paralysis -> one-shot. Fix: Carry Antidotes/paralysis cures; use them immediately.

Mistake 6: Mashing Buttons Blindly Mash attack through animations; no Perfect Guard timing; get punished constantly. Fix: Slow down; watch animations and enemy tells; be deliberate.

Mistake 7: Hoarding Items Carry 30 potions 'saving for later' while dying at 30% HP without using one. Consumables exist to be used. Fix: Use potion below half HP; you can buy more.

Mistake 8: Not Talking to NPCs Run past NPCs to 'just fight'; miss side quests, affinity, story context, free items. Fix: Talk to every NPC with dialogue marker when in town.

Mistake 9: Greeding for Damage at High Risk Risk orange/red, 40% HP: 'one more skill will finish...' -> one-shot -> redo fight. Fix: Back off, heal, let Risk reset.

Mistake 10: Afraid to Retreat Boss wipes party; run back immediately and die again instead of preparing. Fix: If you die 3-4 times, leave, grind a level, upgrade gear, unlock a skill, change party, return.
