Lisbeth Tank Build: Mastering the Frontline with Mace

Category: Combat & Skills | SAO Hollow Realization Guide

Lisbeth is not just the blacksmith -- she is the best tank in SAO: Hollow Realization. Learn her mace tank playstyle, how to build for frontline durability, and how to control the battlefield with staggers.

Playing As a Mace Tank If you enjoy being the frontline, absorbing hits, and controlling the flow of battle, playing a mace tank build (either as Lisbeth in your party or by using maces yourself) is one of the most satisfying playstyles in SAO: Hollow Realization. You are not the highest damage dealer, but you are the reason your party CAN deal damage safely. Every stagger you create, every hit you absorb, every stun you land lets your DPS allies unload without worrying about being interrupted.

Tank Core Principles Whether you are controlling a mace user or relying on Lisbeth in your party, these are the principles of effective tanking: • Stay in front -- Your job is to be the closest party member to enemies, drawing their attention and attacks away from your more fragile allies. • Build stagger constantly -- Every swing of your mace contributes to stagger. Prioritize consistent hits over flashy big-damage skills. Staggered enemies cannot attack. • Use super armor -- When enemies wind up big attacks, do not run away. Use a mace skill with super armor to tank through the hit while continuing to attack. This is your signature mechanic. • Create Switch opportunities -- Staggered enemies trigger Switch prompts. Learn to recognize the stagger animation and immediately trigger Switch to your DPS allies for massive follow-up damage. • Know when to Perfect Guard -- Super armor lets you absorb hits, but Perfect Guard negates damage entirely and guarantees a stagger opening. For particularly heavy boss attacks, Perfect Guard is still your best option.

Player Tip: If you are playing a mace tank, your skill palette should include at least one super armor skill that you can use reactively. Keep it readily accessible so you can pop it the moment you see a big attack windup. Do not waste your super armor skills when enemies are not attacking.

Stat and Skill Priorities for Tanks If you are building your own character as a mace tank: • VIT first -- Vitality increases your HP and defense, making you harder to kill. Stack as much VIT as you can from gear and skill tree nodes. • STR second -- Strength increases mace damage and stagger buildup. You need to hit hard enough to actually stagger enemies. • AGI for dodge quality -- You will not dodge as much as a dagger user, but some AGI improves your Perfect Guard window slightly and makes you less sluggish. • Aggro/draw skills -- Unlock any taunt or enemy-attract skills from the mace tree or battle skills. These ensure enemies focus on you rather than your party. • Defensive passives -- Any passive that reduces damage, increases HP, or improves guard effectiveness is a priority.

Party Composition for Tanking When you (or Lisbeth) are the tank, build the rest of your party around that role: • Asuna -- Mandatory for healing and melee DPS. She will keep you alive while you hold the frontline and follow up on your staggers with Switch attacks. • Sinon or Dual Blade user -- For high damage output. With you staggering and Asuna healing, a high-DPS third member melts enemies quickly. • Avoid bringing two other melee characters unless they can take care of themselves. Too many melee allies cluster around enemies and can get hit by AoE attacks intended for you.

Tanking Bosses Against bosses, your job is: • Hold the boss's attention so it faces you, giving your allies safe positions at the boss's sides or rear. • Watch the boss's attack patterns and use super armor or Perfect Guard to handle its heaviest hits. • Stagger the boss whenever possible to create openings for your party to unload their strongest skills. • Watch the Risk gauge -- at high Risk, boss attacks hit much harder. Even as a tank, you can be one-shot if Risk is maxed and you mistime a defense. • Communicate with your party via commands -- if you need a moment to heal, use Defensive tactics; if the boss is almost staggered, go All-Out. Mastering tank play makes you the most valuable player in any multiplayer group and makes even the toughest story bosses manageable with your AI party. It is not the flashiest role, but it is arguably the most impactful.
