Mid-Game Boss Guide: Ancient Golem (Canyon/Mine Boss)

Category: Advanced | SAO Hollow Realization Guide

Defeat the Ancient Golem boss at the end of the canyon mine. How to break through its high defense, survive shockwaves, and stagger this stone titan for Switch combos.

Ancient Golem Overview The Ancient Golem (or Stone Colossus) is the massive earth boss waiting at the end of the canyon mine dungeon. It has incredibly high physical defense, hits extremely hard, and covers large areas with its attacks. This fight tests your patience and your ability to punish windows rather than just spamming damage. Players who try to brute-force it without learning patterns will get frustrated quickly.

Party Setup and Preparation • Recommended party: Lisbeth is ABSOLUTELY mandatory here. Her mace is the only thing that builds stagger reliably through the golem's defense. Asuna for heals is non-negotiable. Third slot can be Sinon for ranged chip damage or Premiere for extra support. • Consumables: Stock up heavily on HP potions and SP potions. This is a long fight. • Weapon choice: Mace is ideal if you use one. For other weapons, focus on your highest-damage skills rather than fast weak hits. • Armor: Equip your highest physical defense gear. Every hit from this boss hurts.

Player Tip: Do not even attempt this boss if your weapon is unupgraded. The golem's defense is so high that weak weapons will bounce off or do negligible damage. Even a modest upgrade to your weapon makes a noticeable difference.

Golem Attack Patterns Learn these attacks and how to respond to each: • Single fist slam -- It raises one fist and slams it in front. Medium damage, easy to dodge sideways or Perfect Guard. This is one of your best punish windows after it slams. • Double fist ground pound -- It raises both fists overhead and slams both down, creating a large shockwave around it. This is its heaviest-hitting regular attack. Create distance or Perfect Guard the impact; the shockwave can hit you even if you are slightly away from its fists. • Sweeping backhand -- It swings one arm in a wide horizontal arc. This has deceptive range. Dodge backward or Perfect Guard; dodging sideways may still get you caught. • Boulder throw -- It rips a rock from the ground and hurls it at a party member. Dodge sideways or block. Sinon tends to get hit by this if she is not repositioning. • Charge/roll -- It rolls forward like a boulder, covering distance quickly. Dodge sideways, NOT backward. If you get caught by the roll, you take multiple hits.

Staggering the Golem The key to this fight is stagger. The golem has a huge stagger threshold, but once staggered, it collapses for several seconds, letting your party unload massive damage. Lisbeth builds stagger faster than anyone else -- let her attack from the front while you hit from the sides. When the golem performs its double-fist slam or charge, it has a long recovery animation where it is particularly vulnerable to stagger buildup. When the golem collapses from stagger, immediately trigger Switch to your party members and chain your strongest SSC combo. This is where most of your damage comes from -- NOT from chipping away during its active phases.

Adds Phase At roughly half HP, the golem summons smaller rock minions. These do not have much HP individually, but they can interrupt your skills and add chip damage. When adds spawn: • Use AoE skills to clear them quickly. • Do NOT chase them all over the arena -- they come to you. • After adds are down, the golem may have a brief vulnerability window.

Final Phase Tips At low HP, the golem enrages: its attacks become faster, it uses the double-fist slam more often, and the shockwaves are larger. Stay patient, keep Lisbeth alive (she builds the stagger you need), keep Asuna alive (she keeps everyone alive), and focus entirely on surviving between stagger punish windows. This is not a fight you rush down -- you methodically break its posture, punish, and repeat until it crumbles.
