Mid-Game Dungeon Walkthrough: Desert Underground Ruins

Category: Walkthrough | SAO Hollow Realization Guide

Survive the Desert Underground Ruins dungeon in SAO: Hollow Realization. Traps, buried chambers, ancient mechanisms, and the sealed boss waiting within.

Descending Into the Ruins Beneath the desert sands lie ancient ruins, a multi-level dungeon with traps, sealed doors, and combinations of desert enemies that you fought above ground in tighter quarters. This dungeon introduces puzzle-like mechanics (pressure plates, switches, sealed doors) that require some light problem-solving in addition to combat skill.

Entrance Hall and Traps The first section teaches you that this dungeon has traps: • Arrow dart traps activate when you step on pressure plates. Watch for raised or differently colored tiles on the floor and avoid stepping on them. • Scorpion and sand enemy patrols guard the main corridors. Use corners to your advantage -- fight enemies in small alcoves rather than pulling multiple groups. • Some doors are sealed and require you to find a switch or lever in a side room. These are usually not far off the main path. • Treasure rooms often contain the best mid-game desert equipment but also contain ambushes. Approach chests cautiously.

Player Tip: If you trigger arrow traps, you can block or dodge through the arrows. Perfect Guard even works on them if your timing is good. Do not panic-run through trapped hallways -- that is how you eat multiple trap volleys at once.

Sealed Chambers and Puzzle Elements Deeper into the ruins: • You will encounter rooms with multiple doors, only one of which opens initially. Clearing enemies or hitting switches opens the other paths. • Some rooms have pressure plates that require you (or an ally) to stand on them while others advance. You can use NPC allies for this -- they will sometimes hold positions, or you can use the 'Wait' tactical command. • Sand periodically falls from the ceiling in certain corridors, partially obscuring vision but not dealing damage by itself. • A miniboss, often a larger scorpion or armored bandit leader, guards the key to the boss chamber.

Pre-Boss Preparation As with all dungeons, there is a teleport stone and often a safe area before the boss: • Activate the teleport stone so you do not have to reclear the dungeon on retry. • Use any healing points in the room. • Check your potion supply -- restock from inventory if needed. • Repair if your gear is getting low on durability (you should have repair kits or plan to teleport back if needed).

Sealed Desert Ruins Boss The boss is an ancient guardian of the ruins, often a large armored creature or scorpion king variant. Key mechanics: • Fast, multi-hit pincer combos that can stun-lock you if you get caught by the first hit. Dodging sideways is safer than backward. • A tail sting attack that has long range and inflicts paralysis. Dodge this at all costs. • Burrowing underground phase where it disappears and re-emerges beneath party members. Keep moving in circles during this phase; do not stand still. • It summons smaller scorpion adds at low HP. Clear these quickly or they will paralyze you at the worst possible moment. Strategy: Keep your party alive. Paralysis is the biggest threat -- bring paralysis cures. Stay close to its sides where pincer attacks have a harder time hitting. When it burrows, keep moving and watch the ground for sand disturbances that indicate where it will emerge. As with all bosses, capitalize on stagger windows from Lisbeth with Switch chains to Asuna. Survive the adds phase and the boss will fall.
